Businessman Gets Approval to Operate Casinos Online

The regulation of online casinos has always been a tricky matter.  Since the inception of online gambling, any casinos that were operating online were subject to the laws from which their operations and server were based.  And although this is still the general policy, other areas of online casino regulation, such as how and where payments of winnings can be made, can cause a number of legal issues.

This was the case for the Montego businessman, Spiros Athanas, who was being prosecuted by the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission Act, for taking illegal bets over the internet and though international telephone calls.  However, since the allegations first presented themselves last year, the case has winded down and has been officially dismissed since a key witness did not show to give testimony.

Athanas business, which started out as a telemarketing firm, branched into gambling, which then branched into online gambling (not necessarily related to online casinos).  Taking bets on sporting events from bettors around the world, Athanas had to start send winnings internationally, which brought up some red flags, which in turn, impelled the Betting Commission to shut Athanas' operations down.  However, now Athanas has been granted to begin taking online bets again with certain stipulations.
